Creating a trusted ecosystem for safer roads

Data for Road Safety (DFRS) is a public-private cooperation established to enable the exchange of Safety-Related Traffic Information (SRTI). Bringing together public authorities, road operators, vehicle manufacturers, automotive suppliers and service providers, DFRS creates the conditions for trusted, cross-border data sharing to improve road safety.

Why DFRS was createdThe regulatory and political background

Road safety remains a major challenge in Europe. To support safer roads and accelerate the deployment of intelligent transport services, the European Union established a framework for the exchange of Safety-Related Traffic Information through Delegated Regulation (EU) No 886/2013.

The regulation identifies a series of safety-critical events and conditions — such as temporary slippery road, short-term road works or unprotected accident area — that should be communicated to road users wherever possible. As vehicles became increasingly connected and capable of detecting hazards in real time, a common approach was needed to enable the exchange of this information across brands, borders and systems.

In February 2017, European Transport Ministers, the European Commission and industry stakeholders gathered in Amsterdam for the first High-Level Meeting on Connected and Automated Driving. One of the key outcomes was the creation of the public-private Data Task Force (DTF), tasked with exploring how vehicle-generated data could be shared to improve road safety.

The work of the Data Task Force laid the foundations for today’s DFRS ecosystem and the governance framework that supports the exchange of Safety-Related Traffic Information across Europe, with a global impact.

The SRTI EcosystemHow the exchange works

The Safety-Related Traffic Information (SRTI) Ecosystem was created by DFRS members to enable the exchange of data and information under the terms of a Multi-Party Agreement, creating a trusted environment for collaboration that helps users receive timely warnings about hazardous situations.


  • Free of charge

    Data is exchanged within the SRTI Ecosystem for the sole purpose of road safety, without any financial compensation between the parties.


  • On the basis of reciprocity

    The reciprocity principle simply means that if you get something, you give something. Each role brings a value to the Ecosystem.


  • For road safety only

    Data received through the SRTI Ecosystem can only be used to create Safety Related Traffic Information. It is strictly prohibited to use the data for any other purpose, as the members consider other usage to be commercial use cases.

Legal frameworkThese principles and other agreements are part of the Multi Party Agreement signed by the partners, and are valid within the SRTI Ecosystem. Joining the SRTI Ecosystem by signing the Multi Party Agreement alters in no way any rights and obligations parties have, including the European Delegated Regulation on the exchange of Safety Related Traffic Information.
